I was the lead web designer for Friday Night and a secondary designer for Barely Standing. I did a lot of trouble-shooting and customizing of themes to get the looks we wanted, but the biggest trouble-shooting came when our domain expired while we were changing domains and transferring servers. We lost several of the old things we were trying to transfer for a while, and different parts of the website were working off and on for a few days while I made many calls to customer support at several places.
After scoring in the third period, Owatonna senior Justin Brown celebrates the goal during a game against Rochester Mayo Dec. 20 at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna, Minn. Despite Brown’s goal late in the game, the Huskies lost 3-2. Back in Minnesota over winter break, I’m shooting high school sports for my dad while I’m home. Last week, I shot hockey and swimming. Hockey is something that I always miss shooting while I’m in Kentucky, so it’s fun to be back in the “State of Hockey” for a few weeks. Since the swimmming pool here is very dark, I decided to experiment with some remote lights at the swim meet. I had two Canon 580ex ii strobes setup to bounce light off of the ceiling and distribute it over about a third of the pool (see setup photo below).

I worked with HOTEL INC., a local organization that provides both financial support and a food pantry for people in need. When I first walked in, I was struck by how many people were waiting in line to receive food. At that point, I decided that doing a more traditional story on one person wouldn’t be adequate; I felt that I needed to make a video that showed both the quantity and the variety of the individuals served. Here’s what I came up with: HOTEL INC. of Bowling Green offers food and financial assistance to families in need. The number of people served by the food pantry portion of the organization has more than doubled over the last four years, with 2,052 people being served from January to September of 2011. More than a year and a half later, I’m wrapping up several projects before ending my employment with the Honors College at the end of this semester. While I’m looking forward to having more time to spend on my thesis project next semester, I will miss working with a creative group of coworkers who have become good friends of mine. Over fall break, the Honors Hemingway and Faulkner class that I’m in this semester took a trip to Chicago to visit Hemingway’s birthplace. My bosses decided to have me make a video on the trip to help sell new students on our academics— which also meant having my entire trip paid for! Here is that video:

I was also able to have a fun portrait shoot for a story we’re running about a freshman in the Honors College who has worked as a magician. About halfway through the shoot he told me that he could light his wallet on fire…
